Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) Training

Learn the skills to fly using instruments instead of visual cues. These skills will enable you to operate aircraft in adverse weather or low visibility conditions.

What is IFR?

Most flight training occurs under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), i.e. in conditions which allow the pilot to fly using visual cues outside the aircraft. These conditions are known as Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) and the pilot is able to visually see and avoid other aircraft or obstructions and maintain a visual reference to the ground.

When conditions do not allow for VFR, flights must be conducted under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Non-VFR conditions are known as Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) and are conditions where visual cues cannot be relied on, such as flying after dark or in adverse weather conditions. In such cases pilots need to be able to fly using the aircraft’s instruments. – Some exceptions apply, such as Night VFR which allows you to fly at night in certain conditions.

While initial flight training does include basic instrument flying, you need to obtain an Instrument Rating to be able to fly under IFR.

IFR Prerequisites:

• Successful completion of the CASA IREX exam prior to start.

• You must hold a PPL or CPL to commence instrument training.
